Bill Shorten is Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Canberra, a role he began in January 2025 immediately following his tenure as a Cabinet Minister. With a distinguished career in Australian public life, he is widely recognised as a former leader of the Australian Labor Party and co-architect of the National Disability Insurance Scheme. His commitment to public service spans decades, including leadership roles in the union movement and nearly ten years as a Director of Australian Super. Bill’s academic foundation includes degrees in arts, law, and business administration, reinforcing his long-standing connection to higher education.
Elected to Federal Parliament in 2007, Bill served across a broad portfolio of ministerial responsibilities, from disability services to financial policy and education. His leadership through two federal election campaigns as Opposition Leader underscored his national prominence. At the University of Canberra, he is focused on enhancing the experiences of students, educators, and researchers, while positioning the university as a key contributor to the wider community. He views education as a vital driver of equality, opportunity, and democratic resilience.
